Learn How Private Midwives Care for Mothers

Private Midwives provide continuity of care from early pregnancy to 6 weeks postnatal

Recently I met with Rachel Wilson, one of the Midwives from MAMA (Midwives and Mothers Australia).  We had a wonderful chat about all things pregnancy, labour and birth. It was great to speak in length with another midwife about my approach to supporting mothers and their partners through pregnancy and in preparation for labour and to hear about the many services MAMA provides.

MAMA is a team of passionate midwives and other practitioners who offer antenatal and postnatal care and support for Mothers and their families across Melbourne.  Their main hub is in Kensington but now also have a home base in Hampton to support women in the Bayside and South East Suburbs.

As pregnancy, labour and birth are profound events, independent advice and continuity of care provided by midwives from antenatal through to postnatal stages improves physical and emotional outcomes for mothers. This is crucial to the wider wellbeing of families and communities.

MAMA respect mothers as active participants in decisions regarding their pregnancy, birth and wellbeing. They provide guidance based on each client’s unique circumstances to achieve the best outcome for mother and baby.

But, if you’re not quite ready for a homebirth, and would like to have the continuity of a midwife that supports you through pregnancy, labour care at home and birth in a hospital, MAMA has established relationships with alot of the hospitals in Melbourne making this a fantastic option for many mothers.

Can I Access Allied Health Services Through MAMA?

Absolutely! Within the MAMA clinics you’ll also have easy access to lacatation consultants and health practitioners that can support you in pregnancy and post birth. Specifically in the Hampton clinc they have a women’s health physio and nutritionist:-

  • Pregnancy can take a physical toll on your body (not to mention your pelvic floor) so seeing a women’s health physio can be very beneficial. Who better to see than the physio endorsed by midwives.

  • Gestational Diabetes can be a part of many women’s pregnancies so MAMA have a Nutritionist available to ensure you have a great diet throughout pregnancy and that you’re meeting all your nutritional needs post birth too.

At their Kensington clinic there is also a variety of other allied health practitioners.

Want A Pregnancy Or Birth Preparation/Induction Shiatsu Massage?

I am looking forward to welcoming mothers who have been referred by the MAMA midwives into my shiatsu massage clinic and providing them with care that matches the ethos of MAMA and that they’ll love.

I had a pregnancy shiatsu massage and a birth preparation shiatsu massage with Marian. Both were really lovely relaxing experiences that helped me to connect to and sink into my body which was invaluable both in pregnancy and in the lead up to giving birth. I would definitely recommend this to any pregnant women.” - Kate, Educator and Mum to a beautiful baby girl
